No Place To Anchor Your Thread?
Try an "Away Waste Knot"!

This is a great technique for any time you are starting a new thread or beginning a new piece and have nowhere to anchor your thread or fiber.

  1. Tie a knot in the end of your thread (this is about the only time when it is acceptable to do so).
  2. Go down through the front of the fabric about 4" away from the area you'll be stitching and leave the knot on top.
  3. Begin stitching and continue on until you have done enough stitches to provide a strong anchor.
  4. Cut the knot and pull the thread to the back.
  5. Re-thread your needle and weave the tail into the stitches you have just completed.

When else is this technique useful?
This is a fabulous aid when you are working on Hardanger, drawn thread, or pulled work projects.

Here's to beautiful stitching!
